Patelli

Throughout their lives, the brothers Umberto, Luigi and Sergio Patelli supported each other, together they went through a century of wars and misery. But in their history there is a fourth element that makes it special, a particular energy that has strengthened their bond beyond brotherly feeling, the inexhaustible passion for cycling. In the early 1940s, first Umberto and then Luigi were hired at the Cicli Testi in Bologna, a small artisan company specializing in the construction of bicycles that twenty years later would become an important motorcycle company. Sergio, born in June 1928, is the smallest and certainly the most obsessed of the three with bicycles and would have liked to imitate his older brothers. These did not agree and sent him to learn the art of the shoemaker. But Sergio did not last long and managed to get hired by Testi after a year of insistence. In the meantime, his brother Luigi is already an experienced welder, while Sergio is assigned to assembly with Umberto, but only after having spent a period of "apprenticeship" during which he assembles a few thousand wheels. The tragedy of the war spared no one, least of all the Patelli family who lost their mother just two months after the end of the war. After the war in 1948 all three brothers quit Testi, a few months later Umbeto opens the shop in via San Vitale where he hires the two brothers. The shop, which sells walking bicycles and special racing frames welded by Luigi, remained in business until 1964 when Umberto moved its headquarters to via Matteotti and Luigi opened his own workshop in via Massarenti which he equipped for the construction of the frames. . In the meantime, six years earlier, Sergio had opened a shop in his name in the Corticella district, where he had gone to live and where he was very popular thanks to his success as a runner. Unlike the Sergio brothers, he ran by bike and also ran fast. As an amateur he won 49 races, a Giro del Sestriere and the title of Italian Champion in the team time trial of 1953, at an average of 42.2 km / h on 120 km of the roads then and again Italian amateur champion in 1957.
Sergio, like the Umberto, sold racing bikes welded by Luigi as well as various accessories and sportswear. Both stores were immediately successful and all three found themselves working 12 hours a day to satisfy all customers. Sergio and Umberto often took turns in the finishing process which consisted of going to Funo (province of Bologna) where there was a craftsman who did the fine sandblasting, in fact the frames were delicate and the other sandblasting was not going well. Then one of the brothers went to Lanciotto Righi, the "Wizard of Lima", the absolute best in hand finishing, during the day he was a filer at Testi and in the evening he worked the pole frames directly at home. Then there was the milling and chrome plating during which the frames were totally immersed in the nickel bath, so they were completely covered with a layer of metal that would protect them for life from rust. Sergio was particularly picky and when he went to Milan at Cinelli he chose the bottom bracket boxes for his bicycles one by one. He was so appreciated for his attention in the construction of the frames that Cino Cinelli let the employees tell him to call him when Sergio Patelli arrived because he always wanted to have a chat with him. In 1976, Umberto purchased a shed in via Paganino Bonafede where he opened a large workshop for the construction of bespoke frames, in addition to the production of templates, accessories and tools to be sold in the two stores. The master welder and pantographer is obviously always Luigi, who in the meantime has become a very skilled craftsman. Patelli frames soon became coveted for lightness, quality and finish of details both among the runners and among the mechanics of the region and then throughout Italy. The workshop remained in operation until 1990, from then on the welding of the frames was entrusted to third parties whom the brothers had esteemed, such as the craftsman "Silvestro" from Pianoro. In 1997 Umberto, who arrived at the pension, left the shop in via Matteotti to his collaborators Roberto and Dario, thanks to whom today Cicli Patelli is still a precious reference point for Bolognese cyclists. In the same years Sergio also closes the shop after 40 years of activity.
Patelli frames are highly sought after by cycling enthusiasts for passion and for the skill that all three brothers have been able to transfer to every
